In this article we present a new technique to estimate the vessel diameters in three dimensional magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Therefore a multiplanar reconstruc tion (MPR) perpendicular to the vessel center line is used. Unlike the classic method to count segmented pixels we reduce the computation of the vessel diameter to a two dimensional circle segmentation problem. In this special case the segmentation problem is a nonlinear optimization problem, which can be solved using standard optimization algorithms. Moreover the computations are fast and con verge after a few iterations.
