Abstract

Simulation is an alternative and usable approach for collecting performance data and predicting the execu tion behavior of applications. A problem concerning this approach is the accuracy of the simulator reported performance numbers and execution time. This pa per addresses such issues by contrasting the perfor mance information gained from a multiprocessor sim ulator with those achieved by actual hardware. The comparison covers various aspects of performance is sues, including cache performance numbers, absolute execution time, parallel speedup, and impact of local ity optimization. For this both uniprocessors and a cluster environment, as well as performance counters are deployed in this study. Experimental results show that generally the simulation is capable of predicting precise performance.
