Abstract

Barrage, a structure across the river to divert flow into the channel, is designed to satisfy the surface and sub-surface flow considerations. Sub-surface flow considerations require protection against piping and uplift, for which Khosla's theory is used in the Indian Sub-Continent. In the present study, Finite Element Method is suggested as an alternative to Khosla's Theory since it can also take into account soil inhomogeneity and anisotropy.
