Denial of Service (DoS) attacks pose one of the greatest risks to the information services and communication networks of public and private sector organizations. This paper provides an insight into the research being carried out to study the latest trends in DoS attacks and analyzing the different mechanisms being developed to offset the same. It is observed that DoS attacks can be classified into two distinct categories, explicit DoS and implicit DoS. The classification, we believe, will help in developing more effective techniques to counter such attacks.
