Abstract

This paper presents the study of the failure rate of ZnO surge arresters on 22 kV overhead distribution lines. The failure rate depends on statistical data of lightning current waveform, the stroke location, arrester energy capability, v-i characteristic, the rated voltage and the system configuration. The analysis of arrester energy are performed using ATPDraw on 22 kV single circuit overhead distribution lines. The arrester failure rate has been calculated using the probability of failure at failure probabilities of 0%, 1%, 5% and 50 %.
