3-D root canal model is important for non-destructive diagnosis of root canal and successful endodontic treatment. For construction of 3-D root canal model from images, different approaches and techniques are reviewed in this paper. In order to remove radiographic image distortion and obtain true root canal geometric dimensions, the image processing techniques are discussed, including obtaining computer readable images from x-ray imaging, image geometric rectification for oblique images, and reference fixture design and installation in human mouth to establish a reference system. A case study is also given to verify image processing technique and mathematical algorithms.
