Many studies have been done on vehicle license plate recognition projects in recent years. Thanks to rapid development of computing power, some license plate reading systems have been implemented in several countries such as Singapore, China, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom of Britain with acceptable recognition rates and high commercial value. However, due to the diversity of styles of U.S. license plates, it is very difficult to construct a license plate reading system in the United States. This paper provides several novel methods for dealing with the special case of U.S. vehicle license plates. Combined with existing character recognition methods, our methods can successfully implement the license plate reading in the U.S.
