Abstract

This paper outlines how Laguerre series expansions can be used to design rational controllers for possibly unstable distributed parameter systems. The controllers are initially designed for a rational approximation of a possibly unstable distributed parameter system obtained from Laguerre expansions. A new robust stabilization theorem is presented and used to evaluate the stability of the standard unity gain feedback system with the distributed plant based on the accuracy of the rational approximation and the choice of controller. The relationship between the new robust stabilization theorem and an existing one is demonstrated. Coprime factorizations play an important part in this development.
