Abstract

Even though the work of the two main specification bodies of the 3G world, 3GPP and 3GPP2, is based on a varying recent background and differs a lot on bearer level, both defined an All-IP Core Multimedia Domain based on Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) protocols like the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Diameter. This integrated system is the pre-condition of the revenues and the merge of the two most successful paradigms in communications: cellular networks and the Internet. A variety of appealing applications based on value added service enabling technologies like OSA/Parlay, Parlay X, SIP Servlet, CPL and CGI will fire the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) with informational, communicational and multimedia input and logic. This paper provides an overview to the IMS and deals with the different specified options to integrate application servers into the IMS. Proceedings and results of the reference implementations at the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS are described and provide the basis for a comparison.
