This paper presents the performance analysis of a passive optical metro ring network. The access protocol is based on Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoid ance (CSMA/CA) technique, and the electronic packets are transported by fixed length optical packets. Our study is carried out by analytical means using Discrete Time Markov Chain (DTMC). Their results are compared with those obtained by simulation. A FIFO buffer for variable length packets in an edge node implies difficulties in mod eling of the admission of IP packets and the creation of an optical packet. The presented performance results high light that the Markov chains can act as an effective tool for performance evaluation of optical networks.
