Abstract

In this paper, we propose the use of frequency modulation (FM) for transmitting orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based television broadcasting (called OFDM/FM) over satellite communication. Considering to the bandwidth and gain of FM system, we introduce the new concept of efficient bandwidth analysis. FM bandwidth is determined by the variation of peak amplitude, which has intense relation to the peak-to average power ratio (PAPR) of OFDM signals. Therefore, the small OFDM peak variation yields narrow FM bandwidth. We reduce the PAPR of OFDM using clipping technique with oversampling and filtering for removing the out of band noise due to the clipping effects. This paper also presents the optimized clipping design for achieving high performance.
