Abstract

A public key infrastructure forms the technical basis for secure communication in an open network. However, ap plications built on top of it often suffer from usability de ficiencies that may amount to security risks due to user er rors. The present paper identifies the reasons that lead to usability problems with PKI and discusses possible solu tions. Examples include secure email and secure Internet access.
