Abstract

Many of today's wireless communication systems are connected to the internet. The individual setups can become quite complex. Communication involves the handling of various protocols such as, TCP/UDP/IP, GPRS, WAP and HTTP. Performance analysis and troubleshooting is especially difficult for parties not involved in the development of the terminal and server application. An example are solution providers, who usually can neither access the WAP gateway nor trace directly from the client module. A single point of failure inside the communication chain is difficult to debug and performance problems can not be pinned on a certain subsystem with absolute guarantee. Thus the communication chain appears as a "black box." In this paper we present MIMA the "Man In the Middle Analyzer" as an approach for a simple and fast tracing and debugging tool in mobile wireless internet communications. MIMA does not rely on operator or manufacturer support. We also show how performance measurement and error detection can be done in this system. The errors, which may result from the debug system are calculated and tested as well.
