In this paper we investigate the mismatch between ubiquitous systems and current software development methodologies. Specifically we look at the models and modeling involved in the analysis and design of software for ubiquitous sys tems. Our approach is to examine the support offered by the object-oriented paradigm and the Rational Unified Process. The paper points out shortcomings and presents a set of ideas for modeling aspects of ubiquitous systems: quality attributes, target systems, the software domain, and abstractions such as participants, contexts and activities.
