Abstract

Friction and wear are among the most significant factors in processing of materials. Much progress has been made in understanding these phenomena and identifying the factors that govern them. In the metal cutting industry, coolants and lubricants are one of the most frequently used intermediates. They help to increase the tool life, surface finish, and accuracy of dimensions. Biological and environmental considerations are also important factors. This paper gives a short review of environmental process characterization, manufacturing process inventory, and tribological aspects of machining processes.
