Abstract

This paper presents the design, implementation and test results of 802.16a-based OFDM modem for High Speed Portable Internet (HPi). The 802.16a-based uplink (UL) modulator supports ranging and UL burst transmission mode. In the UL, the number of sub channel allocation varies depending on channel environment so the transmit power and SNR changes have effects on link performance. In order to maintain good link quality, it is very important to minimize the transmit power and SNR variation independent of the number of sub-channel allocation. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm and hardware architecture to minimize the transmit power and SNR fluctuation in spite of the number of sub-channel allocation change. The proposed UL modulator was implemented with FPGA and verified by the board-level experiment. Simulation and FPGA implemented test results show that the proposed algorithm minimizes the transmit power and SNR variation and fully complies with the specification.
