Abstract

This paper focuses on the bandwidth analysis of a distributed BSC (Base Station Controller) architecture in CDMA IP Radio Access Network (RAN). In this distributed BSC architecture, Vocoding Processing Function (VPF), frame Selection and Distribution Function (SDF), Packet Control Function (PCF), and Mobility Management (MM) are distributed into separate Network Elements (NE's) interconnected by IP over Ethernet. We outline the protocol stack of different links connecting these NE's. A reference traffic model is also presented and the bandwidth of voice and data bearer traffic is analyzed in details. We present the methodology and a numerical example to calculate the bandwidth consumption as well as the packet per second throughput in the proposed IP-based distributed BSC architecture.
