This paper presents implementation and performance results for an adaptive burst-mode M-QAM modem suitable for variable rate broadband wireless packet data networks. M-QAM is attractive in such networks for enhancing the data throughput during adverse or changing channel conditions. However, M-QAM modems can be complex to implement due to the need to process multiple constellations. The presented modem overcomes this problem with core signal processing functions that are common to all constellations resulting in an efficient hardware architecture for field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation.
