Abstract

Virtual Private Networks promise a very a good alternative to dedicated secured networks, that is cheap, secure and easily implemented. However, on of the trade offs is the network performance. The increase in processing load due to encryption/decryption, affects the data throughput of the network. This paper looks into an experimental deployment of a network and implement a virtual private network on it, using two standard tunneling protocols: IPSec and SSH. It then compares the performances of the two setups.
