asynchronous communication, cluster of workstations, parallel communication channels, performance modelling
The performance of a workstation cluster system depends on the communication cost of the nodes. The performance can be increased by asynchronous communication model, where the communication and computation can overlap, hence some part of the communication overhead can disappear. This paper introduces an analytical model to predict the performance related issues in a small, fully switched cluster environment. The parameters of the model can be identified in simple way. The main contribution is describing the effect of parallel communication channels on the effective bandwidth of a single node. The model is validated by comparing the predicted and measured performance of two communication primitives for a range of message sizes and also varying numbers of participating nodes.
