One of the main intentions of the concept of Web Services is to establish protocols for the interaction between differ ent execution-platforms and programming-languages. The paper presents the results of evaluating three freely avail able environments from different vendors in order to test their abilities to interact among each other in the context of the transfer of complex objects. The platforms considered are the WebSphere SDK for Web Services 5.1 from IBM [3], the .NET Framework SDK Version 1.1 from Microsoft [6] and the Java Web Services Developer Pack 1.3 from Sun Microsystems [8]. The Simple Object Access Pro tocol (SOAP) and the Web Service Description Language (WSDL) are taken as a basis upon which three sample Web Services and proxies are created for each platform.
