Using Narratives to Analyse Systems Failures

Abstract

Systems failures are very complex and to be properly understood they have to be examined from the perspectives of all of the stakeholders involved. Stakeholders make decisions that are influenced by their immediate environment and by their own individual motivations. It is important to understand how they affect outcome of a project. A narrative method is described that provides simple means of gathering and collating data into a tabular format which may then be extracted according to specific criteria and analysed. A case study is then presented which looks at a recent well known case in a UK academic establishment.
