Preferred Way to Realize Calculation Exercises in Virtual Course

Abstract

Traditionally technical courses usually included lectures and calculation exercises, but now the development in information technology has created opportunities for new forms of education. Web-based teaching materials has been widely available for use at Tampere University of Technology (TUT) for several years. One of these teaching materials is a virtual course called "Environmental Issues of Electric and Electronics Industry". The aim of this paper is to study and present students opinions about how the calculation exercises should be implemented in this particular virtual course and in virtual and traditional courses generally. Opinions were measured with a specific questionnaire form. According to the feedback received, calculation exercises included in web-material seem to be a useful way to learn, and it will be used in other courses in the future.
