Abstract

The advent of online and Internet technologies impacted distance education at the tertiary level in such a profound way that we have the emergence of a new entity in higher education: the networked university. With the term networked university we denote an institution(s) of higher education that facilitates learning via networked information technologies. In this article we explore the status of networked universities in the United States (US). To put things into perspective, initially, a brief description of higher education in the US is given. Then we define and describe three models for networked universities along with specific examples in each model. Finally, we offer five principles of good practices for a successful networked university.
