Collecting Statistical Data of the Usage of a Web based Educational Software

Abstract

TRAKLA2 is a web-based educational software for solv ing exercises on algorithms and data structures. The sys tem has a cognitive tool for simulating algorithms visually and it can present model solutions of the exercises and as sess students' solutions automatically. A method for col lecting logging data of the usage of TRAKLA2 software and some results of analyzing the data gathered during the algorithms and data structures course at Helsinki Univer sity of Technology in spring term 2003 are presented. The study concludes that such analysis of the logging data can be an important method for evaluating the efficacy of the software in improving students' learning.
