Abstract

Current approaches to managing data, information and knowledge lack a conceptual model that relates and distinguishes these types of content in a fashion that allows for variation in the presentation and imaging of the content. As a result, current approaches confuse the presentation mechanisms with the storage and management of content. We describe several problems that result from focusing on presentation as opposed to the foundational relationships of the content. We propose a unifying conceptual model that explains how relationships pervade data, information and knowledge. The model is entity/relationship based and addresses the previously described problems. To demonstrate the application of the proposed model, we describe the architecture of a relationship-rich based software development system.
