Abstract

In this paper we present a new energy function for a phase-shifting transformer that has a fixed phase between the terminal voltage and the voltage boost. We used a structure-preserving framework so that the energy function of the phase-shifting transformer can also be added to the existing energy functions that incorporate detailed generator and load models. The proposed structure-preserving energy function can describe arbitrary power system with any number of phase-shifting transformers that have a fixed phase between the terminal voltage and the voltage boost. The new energy function was verified in two test systems using potential-energy boundary-surface method. The results show that the energy function can be used for assessing the transient stability of an electric power system.
