Abstract

Scattered habitation, rugged terrain, and low energy consumption needs, combined with the high reliability, low maintenance cost, and almost no skill required for operation of PV systems make these systems very attractive for remote villages in Nepal. Many organizations have been promoting Photovoltaic (PV) systems alone and many others have been promoting income-generating activities only. HELP program, designed and implemented by Himalayan Light Foundation (HLF) is a first multi-faceted program in Nepal that integrates the dissemination of renewable energy (PV) technologies with the income-generating activities along with the local development programs and better local economy. Based on HELP concept, various other programs have been launched promoting renewable energy technologies making huge impact on social and economic front. Details and outcomes of the program are presented along with various other benefits and achievements.
