Demand for a multiband antenna, which covers GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, UMTS, WLAN, and Bluetooth, is obvious. This paper presents a novel compact multiband antenna for hand-held devices, which covers above mentioned six frequency bands. The antenna is based on the U-PIFA topology. A modal current analysis is carried out for U-PIFA and the design of a multiband PIFA is discussed in detail. Theoretical results are verified in practice. Theoretical results are in good agreement with the measurements, which proves the designed antenna covers all the required frequency bands. In addition, a multiband antenna should occupy not more than 40 * 30 mm2 area. The designed antenna occupies a 40 mm * 22 mm area satisfying the criterion.
