Abstract

This paper puts forward an argument that the structured use of digital video can positively support the learning experience of both students and teachers. Ways in which video can support learning are analysed in terms of three educational frameworks. Evidence suggests that structured activities using video can be particularly effective, particularly when combined with other strategies such as problem based and collaborative learning. Strategies for developing effective video based material are outlined, based on the increasing availability of flexible authoring tools and enhanced support for video in commonly available office software packages.
