Abstract

In recent years, several new architectures have been developed for supporting multimedia applications such as video/audio providers, and these applications often have stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements. However, QoS is an important element that is still missing from middleware architectures. In particular, existing database middleware solutions for supporting multimedia applications are inadequate for these new environments because they are designed for rather static systems. As a solution for these problems, we are developing a prototype for supporting multimedia applications using the NetTraveler middleware architecture. Our prototype will be designed to form ad hoc federations of sites that work together to deliver multimedia content. Also, this solution will adapt to changes in the environment to provide access to newly available data sources to provide QoS.
