Abstract

Wireless is hot right now. Anything and everything that can use this technology is trying to use it. Technologies like Bluetooth, HomeRF and 802.11b are being deployed everywhere. However, for video on demand and other similar applications, wired links are still the preferred option. This is due to the fact that the above mentioned technologies cannot support high bandwidth and suffer from variable characteristics arising due to factors like multipath propagation, electromagnetic interference and obstacles to line of sight. Newer technologies like 802.11a deliver more bandwidth and look promising. However, multimedia applications that demand increasingly more bandwidth are becoming popular each day as technology keeps providing more bandwidth. Hence, it is important to understand how limited bandwidth can be managed for such applications. We aim to propose and evaluate the use of multimedia adaptation with a hybrid proxy-based approach as a means to better support competing streaming multimedia traffic with greater Quality of Service (QoS) control over an 802.11b wireless LAN. This paper shows how such a scheme can be implemented and validates it through experimental analysis on an 802.11b testbed.
