Abstract

There are lots of software process improvement (SPI) experience reports in the literature, sharing success and inhibiting factors for SPI. However, those factors are so many and so widely spread that it is very hard to use them properly. To help software organizations to use this information, we have ranked and then classified 42 factors influencing SPI initiatives into six organization-related categories. The main result presented in this paper is the identification of both the managerial level and the organizational unit that are affected by each of the factors. We expect that this result will be useful for software organizations attempting to perform SPI initiatives, allowing them to focus their effort on those factors that are most likely to have an impact, and helping them to correctly assign the responsibility for each factor to the appropriate people in the organization.
