Abstract

Software wrapping is a technique in which an interface is created around an existing piece of software, providing a new view of the software to external systems, objects, or users. Wrapping can be accomplished at multiple levels: around data, individual modules, subsystems, or entire systems. This paper characterizes and assesses the wrapper technology. The assessment is performed from the perspective of a software engineer trying to utilize the wrapper technology to reuse the legacy components.
