Conventional representations of the geometries of cutting tools are two-dimensional in nature. This pa per outlines a detailed CAD model for a side milling cutting tool and establishes a new three-dimensional definition for the geometry of side mill in terms of bi parametric surface patches. Seven new angles, termed as, rotational angles, are proposed to define the orien tation of these surface patches. The teeth and body of the cutter are modeled in terms of functional and tran sitional surfaces. Mapping between proposed nomen clature and conventional tool geometry is established. The new paradigm offers immense advantages and nu merous downstream applications.
