In this paper we propose an image processing algorithm development environment that provides: an automatic integration with a widely used image processing appli cation; access to a rich set of mathematical libraries and an easy to learn programming language supporting the object-oriented and functional paradigms. The proposed environment supports the development of applications for the Windows and Linux operating systems. We present a study of some of the most commonly used image processing algorithm development environments. The Python-GIMP approach is studied thus resulting in the authors proposal of the PIPADE (Python Image Processing Algorithm Development Environment) platform.
