UMTS, Base Station Layout, Capacity Planning.
The purpose of this paper is to analyse and plan the coverage and the capacity of base stations in a UMTS environment. The study compares simulations to theoretical results obtained with the link budget. First, we demonstrate how the coverage of the cell decreases while the bit rate grows up when a cell is offering only one service. Then, different traffic types are combined to see how the system load and the interference in the cell reach high levels, degrading the quality of service. Finally, we present a first planning approach of the antennas layout in the city of Barcelona.
