Abstract

In this paper, we investigate the impact of using RED queues on the behaviour of a TCP-friendly rate-based con trol protocol by studying how the TCP-friendliness prop erty is affected by the different parameterisation of the RED queues. We explore the range of optimal RED parame ter values for ensuring the TCP-friendliness of the com peting connections. We use the TCP-Friendly Rate Con trol (TFRC) protocol as the competing source against TCP SACK. Our results show that different RED parameter isations do affect the TCP-friendliness of the rate-based control protocol. We argue that appropriate tuning of the RED gateway can and will significantly improve TCP friendliness of the rate-based control protocol.
