In this paper, a problem of generating and manipulat ing characters, words and sentences is studied. First, we show a method for generating characters by a model with virtual writing device and virtual writing plane. Such characters are then connected in a systematic way to yield word and sentences. Employing control theoretic approach, we develop a scheme for transform ing the typeface of characters or words to the omitted running styles as seen in Japanese calligraphy. A de sign example is also included.
