Abstract

A high-resolution estimation technique called the quadrature subsample estimator has been studied to determine the delay between two periodic signals [6]. This paper analyzes its performance when applied to synchronize two signals for the compensation of gain/phase imbalance and DC offset in a quadrature transmitter. The effects of the nonlinearity in the signals and sampling errors in analog-digital conversions (ADC) on the accuracy of the time delay estimate are studied. A generalization method is proposed in this paper for a sinusoidal signal with arbitrary nonambiguous frequency regardless of what sampling rate is adopted. Computer simulations are used to verify the performance analysis in the presence of measurement noise, sampling errors, and nonlinearity.
