This paper investigates methods of optimizing the design of single phase induction motors. The augmented Lagrangian multiplier method (ALMM) is described and compared with the complex method. The ALMM is shown to be supe rior, both in its ability to use infeasible starting points and in the number of required iterations to reach an optimum.
