GIS, 3D simulation, mining, Visual impact analysis and assessment (VIAA), Visibility Index.
The main objective of this paper is to propose a preliminary computerised procedure for visual impact analysis and assessment of a mining project in the phases of elaborating and evaluation. The study has been developed for an existing project of an open pit in central Sardinia. A new parameter called Visibility Index has been introduced to describe the influence of mining operations on the visibility on the site from the surrounding land. The index has been computed taking into consideration the evolution of the area involved in the exploitation activity.
