Abstract

To achieve more efficient and stable power transmission, this study proposes a modular multilevel converter (MMC) control strategy based on virtual synchronous motor (VSM). The study first designs a mathematical control model for the MMC, then optimises its method for suppressing circulating current, and proposes an optimal control strategy for the converter in combination with virtual synchronous technology. The simulation results indicated that the proposed optimised control strategy performed well. In the event of a sudden increase in active load, this control scheme could quickly return to steady state in just 0.4 s, with the grid frequency returning to 45 Hz after 2.4 s. The active and reactive voltage synchronisation absolute errors were both controlled within the range from −0.1 to 0.1, indicating high efficiency in maintaining voltage stability. This indicates that the designed control scheme can show better control performance compared to sliding mode control (SMC) and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control, and can realise more efficient and accurate grid control.
