Abstract

This paper presents the interconnection of neighbouring islanded smart DC and AC microgrids, using the bidirectional single-phase voltage source converter (VSC). The interconnected system consists of an islanded DC microgrid (DCMG) and a single-phase AC microgrid (ACMG). A control technique of single-phase VSC has been developed for interconnecting the islanded DCMG and ACMG. The proposed control technique is suggested based on the two revolving field theory, into two rotating d–q synchronous reference frames. The combined feed-back and feed-forward control signals are used in this proposed control technique, with a pair of proportional integral (PI) controllers for controlling the forward as well as the backward components of both the AC voltage and current. The developed controllers are aimed at controlling the bidirectional flow of power between both the connected microgrids and maintain the rated voltages of both the microgrids. In this paper, a control algorithm has also been proposed for power balancing in the interconnected microgrids. The simulation results have been conducted to show the effectiveness and robustness of the developed interconnected microgrid system with the developed controllers, under various operating scenarios.
