Abstract

The integration of Renewable Energy Sources is becoming more and more widespread. Frequently, many green energy sources (wind generator, photovoltaic systems, hydro-electric systems, etc.) are jointly exploited to feed the main grid to minimize the effects of the intermittent production. Thus, maintaining the stability of the grid is an important challenge and the integration of storage systems becomes necessary. In this paper, the authors present the study and the control of a multi-function PV inverter with an integrated super-capacitors energy storage system. This hybrid structure aims at providing the continuity of supplying energy, minimizing the short-term power fluctuations on the grid side during transient state and improving grid stability. To achieve these goals, a Linear Matrix Inequalities approach is used for the controller design. Detailed control strategies and super-capacitors sizing are described. The effectiveness of the storage system in smoothing the power injected to the grid is experimentally validated.
