Voltage vector control, multilevel inverter, distributed generationunit, distribution systems
This paper presents an innovative control scheme for the multi-level inverter-based distributed generation unit (DGU). The paper presents a novel development for a vector control scheme to add more functionality to the DGU, which enables the DGU to work in different modes. The proposed control scheme is applied on the DGU, which is a nine-level diode clamped, (multilevel), inverter circuit. The presented control scheme is developed to operate this inverter so as to precisely control the injected active and reactive power in the normal operation and abnormal operation of the power grid. Moreover, the proposed scheme controls the DGU to work in an autonomous mode forming a micro-grid, anti-islanding mode for fast protection of the DGU, and ride-through mode in a form of a mitigation device for voltage quality problems such as voltage sags. The simulation results prove the capability of the presented control scheme and validate how the instantaneous power is efficiently exchanged with the power grid.
