Abstract

Variable-speed control of centrifugal pumps is gaining popularity because the affinity laws promise that substantial energy saving is to be expected. Estimation of energy saving using the affinity laws, however, will be erroneous if there is static head in the pump system. This paper presents a method for investigating the performance of a centrifugal pump operating at an arbitrary speed in a pump system with static head, which will lead to development of formulas for computing flow rate, head and efficiency of the pump. Knowledge of these formula results in a more accurate estimate of power input of a variable-speed pump than an estimate provided by the affinity laws. Four commercial pumps manufactured by Apex Pumps are considered.
