Sliding mode (SM) controllers are well suited for the control of pulse width modulation (PWM) based buck converters due to their simplicity, robustness and stability. The choice of the sliding surface plays a dominant role in controller design because it not only prescribes the transient characteristics but also the magnitude of the control signal. Hence a wrong choice of the sliding surface coefficients will result in unwanted transients and excess control effort. In this context, this paper presents a new method to design the sliding surface, which will ensure the prescribed transient response and also yield reduced control effort. By comparing with already published results, where a conventional design approach is adopted, it is shown that the SM controller designed on the basis of the proposed sliding surface design yields much reduced control effort and ensures the prescribed transient characteristics which the conventional design fails to achieve.
