Abstract

This paper gives details of a new phase-selection scheme for faults on single circuit transmission line. The new scheme is based on modal analysis theory and fault generated high frequency transient current. The new scheme can select the fault phase within 8 ms based on the calculated energy of high frequency transient current and does not require communication between the two ends of the line. Extensive simulation studies have been carried out to examine the response to different power system and fault conditions. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has good performance and is insensitive to fault inception angle, fault resistance, and system operation conditions.
