Abstract

Finite Element Method (FEM) is commonly employed for investigation of static and dynamic properties of machine tool structures. However, real machine tool FEM models are usually very large, which makes it impossible to easily use them e.g. in advanced simulations of feed drive control or for creation of coupled models of more flexible bodies. For such tasks it is therefore needed to search for an appropriate strategy of the FEM models reduction. During the reduction procedure the size of machine mathematical model is reduced, whereby various methods provide differ ent level of approximation of the original model properties. Aim of the paper is to search among certain number of reduction methods for such technique, which would give the best performance in terms of static and dynamic properties of reduced bodies, at the same time providing significant level of the model size reduction. Application and feasibility of various reduction strategies is investigated and discussed on an example of machine tool simplified structure.
